Il pr\u00e9sentait encore son travail lors d\u2019une conf\u00e9rence que nous avons eu la chance de suivre au congr\u00e8s national de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 fran\u00e7aise de microbiologie \u00e0 Marseille. Et quel travail\u00a0! une remise en cause de la biologie telle quelle est classiquement vue et enseign\u00e9e\u00a0! un coup de pied dans la\u00a0fourmili\u00e8re\u00a0qui fait toujours du bien!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Et aujourd\u2019hui encore \u00a0le laboratoire de Jean-Michel Claverie, l\u2019un de ces collaborateurs, vient de d\u00e9couvrir un de ces m\u00e9gavirus encore plus impressionnant. Commen\u00e7ons sa dissection:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Megavirus chilensis<\/em> a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9couvert au large du Chili par l\u2019\u00e9quipe du laboratoire Information g\u00e9nomique et structurale (IGS) de l\u2019universit\u00e9 de Marseille. Il est d\u00e9crit comme \u00e9tant un parasite des organismes unicellulaires composant le plancton.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Alors qu\u2019une bact\u00e9rie comme <em>E. coli<\/em> \u00e0 un diam\u00e8tre de 800nm, le virus de la grippe 80nm seulement, ce nouveau <em>Megavirus chilensis<\/em> mesure 440 nanom\u00e8tres de diam\u00e8tre, autant dire qu&rsquo;il est de taille \u00e0 \u00eatre visible sur lame de microscope! Il poss\u00e8de environ 1120 g\u00e8nes dans son ADN de 1,26 million de paires de bases, quand la grippe n\u2019en a que 0,013 millions\u2026 <em>Megavirus chilensis<\/em> est donc le plus gros virus jamais d\u00e9couvert devan\u00e7ant de peu le <em>Mimivirus<\/em> de Didier Raoult.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Jusqu\u2019\u00e0 ces d\u00e9couvertes on d\u00e9crivait les virus comme de petites particules presque inertes incapables de se reproduire seules, et ils ne sont pas consid\u00e9r\u00e9s comme \u00e9tant des organismes vivants \u00e0 part enti\u00e8re. La multitude de g\u00e8nes retrouv\u00e9s chez les m\u00e9gavirus est emb\u00eatante pour ces anciennes th\u00e9ories car si les virus sont si simples pourquoi ont-ils autant de g\u00e8nes et \u00e0 quoi servent t&rsquo;ils?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">En particulier certains g\u00e8nes n\u2019avaient jamais \u00e9t\u00e9s retrouv\u00e9s chez les virus comme des g\u00e8nes codant pour la production d\u2019ARN transporteurs synth\u00e9tases permettant la synth\u00e8se des ARNt qui jouent un r\u00f4le dans l\u2019acheminement des acides amin\u00e9s aux ribosomes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Mimivirus<\/em> et <em>Megavirus<\/em> ont 594 g\u00e8nes en commun et seraient selon les auteurs des descendants d\u2019organismes unicellulaires marins tr\u00e8s anciens, et donc des \u00eatres vivants selon la classification actuelle.
